It's hard to pinpoint just what makes the Humboldt Bass scene so unique. Maybe its the drugs, the weed, the influence of living under the shadows cast by ancient and mighty redwoods or the hoards of California bound trimmers who come for harvest and never leave. No matter the reason, it's clear that Humboldt has been ready to burst open with talent for some time, and now the world is taking notice.
Like the title suggests, this album demonstrates the versatitlity of the Lost Coast's bass scene, an independent ecosystem of influence and connectivity where music is built and rebuilt repeatedly behind the redwood curtain. For the last few years, talent has slowly trickled from Humboldt to the outside world, but with this newest release from the Humboldt Bass Crew, we can finally catch a glimpse of a scene destined for boundless growth and possibility. With established producers remixing up and comers and vice versa, ReAnimation is a genre bending array of chill vibes undercut by heavy basslines in a way not heard quite the same elsewhere, at times placing remixes of the same song back to back without retreading the same ground. Owing to the diversity of talent, the final result of this collective effort is a cohesive but varied mix of almost every influence imaginable that clearly refuses to be labeled and defined. -- David Ruhl
